Natalie Thomas, LCSW, LISW-CP, ACS
Founder of Resilient Roots Counseling & Consulting

Depression can cast a heavy shadow over every aspect of life, making even simple tasks feel overwhelming. Since founding my practice in 2021—and throughout my earlier work in schools and community mental health—I've guided countless individuals through this challenging terrain.

What drives my passion for this work is witnessing the transformation when someone begins to understand their depression. There's something powerful about recognizing that persistent emptiness or heaviness isn't a character flaw or personal failing, but a treatable condition with specific patterns and solutions.

I believe the therapeutic relationship should be a true partnership.

When we work together on depression, I won't hand you a generic list of self-care activities and send you on your way. Instead, we'll explore what makes your experience unique and discover strategies that genuinely resonate with your life, values, and personality.

Drawing from evidence-based approaches like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused techniques, we'll develop practical tools to challenge negative thought patterns, increase meaningful activities, and rebuild connections that depression often damages.

My commitment is to meet you where you are and help you find a path forward that feels sustainable and authentic.

The darkness of depression can feel permanent when you're in it,
but I've seen how the right support can help people rediscover light, meaning, and joy.

You don't have to navigate this journey alone.

Questions

About Depression Therapy

  • Depression can present differently in each person. Common signs include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide. During our initial sessions, we'll work together to understand your symptoms and determine if you're experiencing depression or another condition.

  • While anxiety focuses on worry about future events and often involves feelings of tension and nervousness, depression typically involves persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities. Many people experience both conditions simultaneously—in fact, they commonly occur together. Our therapy approach can address both depression and anxiety when they co-exist.

  • Medication is not required for everyone with depression. I always begin with teaching coping skills and having us work together to track how effective they're working. If we believe we're doing everything we can and depression still feels too overwhelming,

  • Everyone experiences temporary low moods or "funks" from time to time. Depression is distinguished by its persistence (typically lasting at least two weeks), its impact on multiple areas of functioning, and often the presence of physical symptoms like sleep and appetite changes. In therapy, we'll help you understand the difference and develop appropriate strategies based on your specific situation.
